The blackbird has long been a favourite to many, mainly due to its unique and beautiful song. And as such, it has been the subject of art throughout human history. 

As scientists have recently discovered that birdsong makes us happier, the blackbird’s song perhaps makes us happiest of all, with a depth of tone that is unlike any other bird.

As an artist I have always been curious and fascinated by the way that blackbird moves, always in a rush, head down and busy foraging for food or nest material. Its movements and song always lighten my mood.  I have often been awakened by one, as it sings next to my bedroom window; much more beautiful than any alarm!

This original blackbird painting is one of a kind and brings together elements of abstraction, realism and surrealism along with textural elements. I wanted to encapsulate the beauty of the blackbird, its sound, its poise and how I feel when I encounter one. That beautiful sensation of peace, pause and amazement.
